Detailed description of Eisenhower Golf Course, Silver Course

Eisenhower Golf Course is a Military, 36 hole golf facility located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The facility has two, 18-hole golf courses. They are The Blue Course and The Silver Course.

One of the most popular sites at the Academy is the Eisenhower Golf Course. A modern scenic facility with two 18-hole courses: the championship Blue, and the stunning Silver. Named the top golf course in the Department of Defense by Travel and Leisure Golf magazine, and a member of USA Today's Top 100 courses in the nation, Eisenhower Golf Club is a great value.

The Silver course first opened for play in 1975. The course was designed by Frank Hummel.

The silver is a demanding golf course with a premium placed on accuracy rather than length. The course measures 6,519 yards from the championship tees and 5,215 from the forward tees.

The Blue's layout was designed by Robert Trent Jones and measures more than 7,300 yards from the championship tees, 6,516 from the regular tees and 5,559 from the forward tees.

In addition to open play, a full tournament schedule is slated for the spring, summer and fall months. Reservations for tee times are recommended, especially during the busy summer season.

Eisenhower is also the home course for the Air Force Academy's perennial league champion intercollegiate golf team.

The clubhouse features Ike's Grill, which serves up excellent breakfast and lunch fare, the Eisenhower Room, the Pro Shop and locker rooms. Golf clubs, power and hand carts are available to rent from the Pro Shop.

In the area for a reunion, played as a walk-on single, and got paired with 3 long-time residents, who helped immensely with shot lines, and green readings. Course is the newer of the two at USAFA, and is a jewel. No houses, only one hole with an adjacent road, and all 18 are unique. Excellent layout, and walkable by most. Conditions were excellent. Fairways were well-grassed, with no bare spots. Rough is reasonable, bunkers were in good shape, tee boxes were level and not filled with divots (pretty good for this late in the season). But the crowning glory of this course is the greens. They are large, contoured, sloped, and FAST. I had 33 putts, and had it not been for my playing partners telling me of the subtleties, it could have been 45. Very challenging, but really fun! Staff I encountered were professional, welcoming, and very competent. A good group. I highly recommend.

Great mountain course, always in fantastic condition. The greens run away from the mountains, regardless of what your eyes tell you. The staff did a very good job of keeping things moving, explaining when they slowed what they were doing to speed things up again. The course has several elevated tees and sloped fairways, which can get very tight. The zig-zag #12 is a Par 5 that can get you anything from an Eagle to a Triple-Bogey depending on how aggressive you want to be on the 2nd shot! Nothing like an iron over 30' trees to cut the corner! This course is one of the most enjoyable courses I've played...and that says a lot from a golfer of 25+ years.

The silver is more fun than the blue course. There are two challenges to the round. First, Silver requires use of every club in the bag. Narrow margin for error--roughs are narrow and then you are in the mtns. Recovery is tough. Second challenge is the difficulty of the greens. Fast, severe breaks, above the hole--automatic three putt. "All putts break away from the mountain"--but determining which mountain takes a lot of experience.
